Bring on Spring! Baking a dozen rainbows

Does anyone remember double rainbow guy? …Or am I dating myself here? I like to think he would be a huge fan of these cupcakes.

I recently made a batch of rainbow cupcakes in mason jars for someone’s birthday because nothing says “Happy Birthday” like layers of multicoloured cake topped with fluffy frosting and just in case that wasn’t overly cute enough – teeny tiny heart sprinkles. (Those may have been a bit much, but I regret nothing).

Coconut Oil Addict – Loud and Proud!

I can’t not have a jar of good quality coconut oil at home. I just can’t – it’s honestly that essential to me. Like toothpaste, or shampoo, or pickled jalapenos… (they taste good in everything you guys).

Coconut oil, where have you been all my life?

Coconut oil, where have you been all my life?

I was chatting with a friend about all the things I use it for, and realized there were a TON so wanted to share some ways you can use coconut oil if you’re not already on the bandwagon.

Part-Time Herbivore

I once went on a date with a vegan who was also gluten intolerant. After I ordered a rare steak and a pint, he ordered a salad and a vodka soda. We had a good laugh and then enjoyed our first and last date. A few weeks later I met Andrew, who also likes steak so I married him. And they lived happily ever after….

The thing about being in love with a Scottish/Irish/Polish guy is their culture seems hell bent on killing themselves with breaded fried everything and a side of potatoes. I like diversity in my food (sometimes healthy, other times not to much), and while I DO love meat I also tend to eat lots of vegetarian meals. Here are three recipes that I’ve made recently we both liked.

Fighting winter with zucchini bread

I don’t hate winter. I mean I don’t love winter, I just tolerate it every year. Staying indoors all day with a newborn has been the hardest part of maternity leave so far but thanks to lots of visits from friends and family, Netflix, a few nights out (Grandparent-sitters are amazing) and baking whenever I feel bored I haven’t gone all “Jack Torrance” with cabin fever. Yet. (Maybe if he had a better hobby The Shining/murder wouldn’t have happened?)

Give sex in a pan a try

Yeah. I’m pretty sure that title is going to lead to some very confused blog traffic… and now I’m about to bring up my Grandma.

My feisty Grandmother makes this particular dessert, “Sex in a Pan”, and it is always a huge hit. If you Google it you’ll find lots of slight variations on the same recipe but basically everyone agrees it’s insane just how delicious it is. When I try to tell people about it and say “My grandmother’s Sex in a Pan is the best” it earns me a lot of really weird looks.

Skor Oatmeal Cookies, my oh my

I love food blogs. The really beautiful photos of perfect food, all ready for Pinterest. This here is not a food blog. Noone in their right mind would pin my food images, unless maybe in an ironic way (are there sarcastic or ironic Pinterest boards? Can we make this happen?) When I have or find a recipe that is easy and tastes amazing – I want to share it. Crappy not-well-styled photos included. So with expectations clearly set, here is one of those recipes.

Clearly, I could be an Interior Decorator

Living in a downtown Toronto apartment with a baby, space was a bit of an issue. However we’ve somehow made it work using the den as a nursery and incorporating things into the rest of the apartment where we can. I’d like to share a few pictures of how we made room in our apartment for the baby, but first wanted to let you in on my incredible design savvy.

My sister has two beautiful babies, a boy and girl, and being the loving Aunt that I am I wanted to buy something for my nephew’s room when he was born. One day I found an amazing piece in an antique store, it called out “buyyyy meeee….” so I texted my sister a photo and asked her if I could buy it for him. For some reason she politely declined.

Bonus - it's also a cupboard!
